Christoph's story
Onze zoon Christoph – voor ons gewoon “Stoffel” – is bijna 54 jaar en heeft het syndroom van Down. Hij is al meer dan veertig jaar deel van de grote Special Olympics-familie. Als twaalfjarige nam hij voor het eerst deel aan de Nationale Spelen in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe. Hij schitterde toen als zwemmer en bracht meerdere gouden medailles mee naar huis. Later schakelde hij over naar tafeltennis, waar hij nu al bijna dertig jaar vol passie voor traint.
Dankzij Special Olympics mocht Christoph mee op wereldniveau: in Dublin behaalde hij een vierde plaats, in Abu Dhabi won hij brons. Zijn absolute hoogtepunt was de Europese Spelen in Antwerpen (2014), waar hij goud won én werd uitgeroepen tot ambassadeur van Special Olympics Belgium. Hij stond op affiches naast idolen zoals Kevin De Bruyne en Jean-Michel Saive, met wie hij sindsdien een bijzondere band heeft.
Special Olympics heeft deuren geopend die wij als eenvoudige West-Vlamingen nooit hadden durven dromen. Stoffel kreeg kansen, werd gezien en gewaardeerd om wie hij is. Zijn zelfvertrouwen groeide, net als zijn wereld. Hij werd zelfs Sportman van het Jaar in onze gemeente én ereburger van Staden, iets waar wij als ouders ongelooflijk trots op zijn.
Christoph is een sociale, vrolijke kerel die houdt van muziek, Club Brugge en Formule 1. Hij woont begeleid in De Branding en werkt er in een creatief atelier en als barman in het verwencafé. Elke week traint hij bij TTC Gullegem, een club waar inclusie écht geleefd wordt. De steun van zijn sportvrienden en coaches is van onschatbare waarde, zeker nu hij recent zijn papa verloor.
Voor ons betekent Special Olympics meer dan sport alleen. Het is vriendschap, respect, kansen krijgen en deel uitmaken van een warme gemeenschap. Stoffel droomt ervan om nog lang ambassadeur te blijven en hoopt ooit Kevin De Bruyne persoonlijk te mogen bedanken voor alles wat hij voor Special Olympics betekent.
Notre fils Christoph – pour nous simplement “Stoffel” – a presque 54 ans et est atteint du syndrome de Down. Depuis plus de quarante ans, il fait partie de la grande famille de Special Olympics. À l’âge de 12 ans, il a participé pour la première fois aux Jeux Nationaux à Sint-Pieters-Woluwe. Il y a brillé comme nageur et a remporté plusieurs médailles d’or. Plus tard, il s’est tourné vers le tennis de table, un sport dans lequel il s’entraîne avec passion depuis près de trente ans.
Grâce à Special Olympics, Christoph a pu évoluer au niveau international : à Dublin, il a décroché une quatrième place et à Abou Dhabi, il a remporté une médaille de bronze. Son plus grand moment reste les Jeux Européens d’Anvers en 2014, où il a gagné l’or et a été nommé ambassadeur de Special Olympics Belgium. Il figurait sur des affiches aux côtés d’idoles telles que Kevin De Bruyne et Jean-Michel Saive, avec qui il a d’ailleurs développé un lien tout particulier.
Special Olympics a ouvert des portes que nous, simples Flamands de l’Ouest, n’aurions jamais imaginé franchir. Stoffel a reçu des opportunités, il a été vu et reconnu pour ce qu’il est. Sa confiance en lui a grandi, tout comme son univers. Il a même été élu Sportif de l’Année dans notre commune et est devenu Citoyen d’Honneur de Staden, une immense fierté pour nous, ses parents.
Christoph est un garçon joyeux et sociable, passionné de musique, du Club Bruges et de Formule 1. Il vit de manière accompagnée à De Branding, où il travaille dans un atelier créatif et comme barman dans leur café chaleureux. Chaque semaine, il s’entraîne au TTC Gullegem, un club où l’inclusion est réellement vécue. Le soutien de ses amis sportifs et de ses entraîneurs est inestimable, surtout depuis le décès récent de son papa.
Pour nous, Special Olympics représente bien plus que le sport. C’est l’amitié, le respect, les opportunités et le sentiment de faire partie d’une communauté bienveillante. Stoffel rêve de rester ambassadeur encore longtemps et espère un jour pouvoir remercier personnellement Kevin De Bruyne pour tout ce qu’il représente pour Special Olympics.
Our son Christoph – "Stoffel" to us – is almost 54 years old and has Down syndrome. For over forty years, he has been part of the great Special Olympics family. At the age of twelve, he participated for the first time in the National Games in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe. He shone as a swimmer and brought home several gold medals. Later, he switched to table tennis, a sport he has been training for with passion for nearly thirty years.
Thanks to Special Olympics, Christoph was able to compete at the world level: in Dublin he achieved fourth place, and in Abu Dhabi he won bronze. His absolute highlight was the European Games in Antwerp (2014), where he won gold and was named ambassador of Special Olympics Belgium. He appeared on posters alongside idols like Kevin De Bruyne and Jean-Michel Saive, with whom he has since built a special bond.
Special Olympics opened doors that we, as simple West Flemish people, never dared to dream of. Stoffel was given opportunities, he was seen and valued for who he is. His confidence grew, as did his world. He was even named Sportsman of the Year in our municipality and became an honorary citizen of Staden — something we as parents are incredibly proud of.
Christoph is a sociable, cheerful guy who loves music, Club Brugge, and Formula 1. He lives in supported housing at De Branding, where he works in a creative workshop and as a bartender in their cozy café. Every week he trains at TTC Gullegem, a club where inclusion is truly lived. The support of his sports friends and coaches is invaluable, especially since he recently lost his father.
For us, Special Olympics means more than just sport. It's friendship, respect, opportunities, and being part of a warm community. Stoffel dreams of remaining an ambassador for a long time and hopes to one day personally thank Kevin De Bruyne for everything he means to Special Olympics.
